He’s a plant-based trendsetter
Before the dawn of meat-free Mondays and Veganuary, Chris Packham ditched meat in the 1980s, and has never regretted his choice.
He has always been a friend to the animals
As a child, Chris had a menagerie to care for! His collection of lizards and snakes, as well as other pets, rivalled any other in the area – in fact, his bedroom walls were completely lined with terrariums and aquariums!
He doesn’t have any biological children
While promoting his documentary about the global population, Chris stated that people should consider having fewer children for the sake of the planet. Chris doesn’t have biological children himself.
He started a bird-watching club during lockdown
Together with his step-daughter, Chris launched The Self-Isolating Bird Club. Members could watch and join in with a half hour’s twitching each on Facebook every morning.
He speaks openly about his Asperger’s
Like environmentalist Greta Thunberg, Chris has Asperger’s Syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder which can cause difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. He was diagnosed in 2005, and speaks openly about his struggles with the disorder.
He’s a keen photographer
After graduating, he began taking still photographs and trained as a wildlife film cameraman. The photography continues, with exhibitions and invitations to judge prestigious competitions.
He was in a band
In his younger years, Chris embraced the punk rock movement and joined a band!
His autobiography is a bestseller
In May 2016 Chris’s autobiography, ’Fingers in the Sparkle Jar: A Memoir’, was released to critical acclaim, reaching number 1 in The Sunday Times Bestsellers in just 2 weeks. It was featured as a Radio 4 ‘Book of the Week, read by Chris.
He’s not a sentimentalist
Although he understands that people find pandas cute and cuddly, he disagrees with single species conservation and believes that we should be looking at the broader picture of the environment.
He’s famous in the States, too!
He was featured in The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon (NBC – US) where he introduced Jimmy to a Porcupine and baby spotted Hyena, and sent a Black Vulture flying to him as he stood in the audience.
